Mikaela Benton served her fellowship in the City of Elizabeth City. She was responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communication plan for the city, including a redesign of the City’s website. Her efforts grew the City’s social media reach and made local government services more transparent and accessible. Benton also worked with the Public Works Department to update their wastewater data system.

Benton graduated from Elon University with bachelor’s degrees in political science and Spanish. During her time at Elon, she received an award for outstanding undergraduate research and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha, and Sigma Delta Pi honor societies. She is also an inaugural Phi Beta Kappa Key into Public Service Scholar. In addition, Benton served as treasurer of the Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Journal of Politics.
