After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill and NC State University in 2024, Kristy Nguyen and Anu Mishra were selected to be part of a unique local government fellowship program based within the UNC School of Government – Lead for NC to work directly with staff and community to work in the Towns of Morrisville and Apex, respectively. Although assigned to work in different towns, both fellows are working to launch each of the town’s Language Access Plan (LAP). Over the past year, the Towns of Morrisville and Apex participated in BIC’s Language Access Collaborative. They worked alongside local community partners Hindi Vikas Mandal and Fiesta Cristiana to learn about language access best practices; conduct community, data, and agency assessments; and develop a language access plan. In this story, Kristy and Anu share some of the steps taken and the impact of implementing Language Access Plans to communities.
