The Role of Social Capital in Public Art

In small towns held together by close ties and limited resources, projects and initiatives succeed or fail based on the strength of interpersonal and organizational relationships. Social capital—the value derived from a web of personal connections and networks—is the unsung hero that makes community projects blossom. It has played a significant role in my work developing and executing the Downtown Spencer Mural Project in Rowan County, North Carolina.
